12:00 – 1:30  Introduction to Windows Workflow Foundation

Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is the programming model, engine and tools for quickly building workflow enabled applications on Windows. It consists of a WinFX namespace, an in-process workflow engine, and designers for Visual Studio 2005. Windows Workflow Foundation includes support for both system workflow and human workflow across a wide range of scenarios including: workflow within line of business applications, user interface page-flow, document-centric workflow, human workflow, composite workflow for service oriented applications, business rule driven workflow and workflow for systems management.  In this session, we’ll do a high level overview of Windows Workflow Foundation and take a look at how you will develop Workflow-based applications with Visual Studio 2005.

1:45 – 3:30  Developing Custom Activities for Windows Workflow Foundation

Activities can be thought of as controls within a workflow, similar to controls used with ASP.NET Pages or Windows Forms.  Like controls, they are the basic building blocks of a workflow and the unit of reusability.  Activities can used be used for anything that needs to happen in a workflow – they can encapsulate execution logic, communicate with the host, edit a database or send email.  While Windows Workflow Foundation ships with a library of standard activities, developing custom activities allows developers to fully tap the power of Windows Workflow Foundation and extend WF to handle custom, reusable and composable business logic.  In this session, we’ll look at how to develop custom activities in Windows Workflow Foundation, how to use them in WF-based applications and how to customize the design-time experience for activities.
